How Sculptra works

Collagen is an organic substance within the body that makes the skin appear elastic and youthful, but as we become older, our body’s natural ability to produce collagen slows down. This is why the skin so often appears saggy and hollow as the years go by. At The Maercks Institute, we combat this process by using Sculptra, which is FDA-approved to treat aging skin and loss of collagen, bone, and volume. When Sculptra is injected into the face, it kick-starts your body’s natural collagen-creating process by using the active ingredient of poly-L-lactic acid. This is a biodegradable and biocompatible material that can be broken down by the body, thereby restoring volume over the course of several months. The final result is a rejuvenated, more youthful appearance.

What are the goals of using Sculptra?

  • Restore volume to the temples and cheeks
  • Soften prominent cheekbones
  • Correct nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Define the jawline
  • Begin new collagen production
  • Restore bone structure
  • Remove folds, contour irregularities, and wrinkles
  • Rejuvenate and take years off the face

What happens during a Sculptra treatment?

There is no allergy testing before a Sculptra treatment because there is no risk of an allergic reaction. (The solution has been utilized in dissolvable stitches in over 30 countries for the last few decades.) Dr. Maercks will inject a conservative amount during the first treatment. He may also use a numbing cream or dental block to minimize any discomfort during treatment. After the injections are complete, you may be asked to massage the area in order to spread the filler and smooth the skin out for optimal results. Sculptra requires a series of injections scheduled 6 to 8 weeks apart.

How is Sculptra different than dermal fillers?

Sculptra is a volumizer rather than a filler. It’s important for those considering this treatment to know that results come much more gradually than they do with hyaluronic fillers. It may take up to six months for Sculptra results to become visible. If you’re looking for more immediate results, please bring this up during your consultation.
